Light weight body armor based on Dyneema® Force Multiplier Technology

DSM Dyneema is the manufacturer of ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMW-PE) fiber, branded as Dyneema®, the strongest fiber in the world™. A study to the key parameters of these fibers, which determine the properties in ballistic applications, revealed that the tenacity is most important. The conclusions of that study have led to the introduction of Dyneema® SK99 in 2012, a fiber with a tenacity more than 10% higher than older fiber grades. Using this new stronger fiber a group of Dyneema® UD grades, known as the Force Multiplier Technology family, has been commercially introduced. Based on this family the lightest armour has been designed for requirements like NIJ 0101.06 level 3A and VPAM BSW level 6 by body armour manufacturers all over the world.

In addition studies by external parties and DSM have demonstrated the durability of these new armour designs over life time and their capability pass conditioning at temperatures, extreme for body armour.

The presentation will show a summary on the modelling of ballistic impact on armour panels, made with Dyneema® and show key conclusions on studies to the life time expectancy and high temperature performance of body armour articles, made with Dyneema®.

Curriculum Vitae

Hans Meulman (1968) is working in the field of ballistic protection for more than 20 years. Since 2005 he is senior Technical Application manager within DSM Dyneema. Some key responsibilities are the development of ballistic resistant articles based on tender requirements, target setting for new products to the Research & Development department and providing technical support to customers for processing Dyneema® UD in soft and hard ballistic applications.

From 1997 to 2005 he was working as a Research Scientist within TNO Prince Maurits Laboratory, performing studies in the field of terminal ballistics for vehicle armor systems and ammunition evaluation.

Hans has published on various subjects related to armor in symposia like the International Ballistics Symposium and the Personal Armour System Symposium.

Hans Meulman has obtained a masters degree in Applied Physics on the University of Technology in Eindhoven and a Master of Technology Design Title in „Computation Mechanics“.
